What would you do if you won the lottery?
I don’t usually go on an out of topic tangent like this, but here is a question that came to my mind today about pleasure and work: if tomorrow you won the lottery and didn’t have to work for money anymore, would you still make jewelry? What would you do different in jewelry making?
Of course, this is directed only to those who make a living making jewelry, not those who have it as hobby, because then it’s assumed that you do it because it’s your passion (if not, find another hobby, less expensive, LOL!).
I think the majority of us will answer an uncondicional YES.
If tomorrow I came into a situation where I no longer needed to produce income, I would STILL do exactly what I am doing right now. I would still make one-of-a-kind or limited production jewelry pieces; I would still create tutorials; I would still dwell on how to create with different techniques with my medium of choice and hey, I would still spend two hours answering email questions every morning!!! Now tell me, how many people can be THAT LUCKY!?
I believe that our profession as jewelry artists is one of the lucky ones: we enter it not because of the money or the success – there are other more profitable and recognizable careers – but we enter it because we ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT.
And if you are not totally in love with it right now, what is it that you would do differently, that you aren’t doing right now?
The only thing I can think of, personally, is: perhaps I would make my office space “cuter”, maybe add a very large flat screen monitor to my computer and some painted fun furniture. I guess can think of making that a medium/long term goal for the next year or two!!!
How about you? :-)

I would keep doing it because I love it so much.
I would also pay some crazy marketing guru to spread my name around since I had such a worry free income. . .I hear marketing gurus are WAY better than google adwords! lol
I agree! I wouldn't worry about how much money I spend on my stash, and I'd buy a studio, but that would be the only real changes! I'd still do what I'm doing.
Eni, it's funny you mention this, because I was thinking exactly the same thing the other day! The only thing I would do differently, is to buy all those high quality, high priced gems that I always drool over, and then pass up cause the price tag gives me heart palpitations (I am talking the 1000$ for a strand of beads :^)... I would also have a bigger better house, with a larger, better studio. My office is awesome.... way better than the 2ft by 2ft marlbe topped chess table in my living room that I started on... But, I would love to be able to see all my beads at a glance!
I would get into PMC, stamping, soldering, and take classes galore! There aren't any classes around here, so I need to fly to find them!
Anyways, I am all excited thinking about this now... LOL... I adore what I do, and I wouldn't give this up for all the money in the world... now if only I could win the lottery!
Hahahaha Eni- I would travel around the world...and no, not only to see amazing places but to get BEST gems and...than have them all at home and make more and more pieces!!!!!!!! hahaha Bless you for this topic x
I would buy all the tools and stones I covet and build the perfect studio! Ahhh what a beautiful dream....
If funds were no issue I would buy more quality gems. It seems I am always compromising. Thanks for your great site and sharing of all ideas!
What a great question! I would still be making jewelry but mainly for myself. That means, I don't have to limit myself to keeping material costs down, designing to fit someone else's style, etc. I would move into a bigger home, settle myself in a big studio where I could create and teach every now and then. Plus, I would buy beads like there was no tomorrow!
Funny, I was just thinking of that the other day. I don't make jewelry as a means of living, but if I didn't have to make a living doing translations I would spend more time with my beads and wire. Take a lot of classes, travel to exotic places and buy exotic beads. But I wouldn't stop translating, which is a good sign, I guess.
It seems the answers all run on the same lines: Buy more beads, buy more exclusive beads, get a better workspace, which would be true for me too.
After paying off Mom's house, buying one for each of my sisters and myself, and setting up college funds for my nieces...
I'd build a studio that could hold all of my new tools and take that glass-making class...
And take a long vacation in Ireland before coming home to make more jewelry...
Wow, what a bunch of kindred spirits we jewellery people are! I could relate with all your comments- and I, too would wish to continue creating...in a bigger studio with limitless, wonderful supplies! I'd take more classes and spend more of my time honing my skills, too. But stop? No way!
What else could be more fun than this?
Lol!! I was thinking of this recently also and i guess I am not very different from anyone else here. I would give a percentage of it to some causes I believe in.I would buy a house with lots of room so my grandkids could stay with me and I wouldn't have to worry about them getting awry of my jewelry stuff ---since of course I would have a huge and wonderfully organized craft room with all the jewelry supplies and tools I could possibly ever want. I would make whatever jewelry I wanted to without worrying if it was going to sell and I would sell it at great prices so everyone could share in the fun. I would pursue all the techniques I have wanted to learn but can't afford--like flameworking and buy only the best tools instead of making due. And I would tavel all over the world to learn from the best!! And travel to buy more beads. And travel just to travel and take my grandies along for the broadening experiences.
But stop making jewelry? I might as well stop seeing colors or hearing lovely sounds. I see jewelry designs in everything I look at! Aside from my spitual beliefs jewelrymaking is my all out passion!
Oh I would LOVE it if money was never a problem. I'd do MORE of what I am already doing...make jewelry. LOL!!! More and more. Buy anything and everything I want to, to make jewerly, LOVELY stones, get more training...as many as I want, pay some interior designer to make a fanatstic studio for me, LOVELY and very organized (yeah, hire someone else to organize for me...because I seriously SUCK at organizing). How wonderful that would be.....sighhhhh.
