Creative journal
Creative journaling is an excellent way to work your creativity. It works as a depository of ideas for those times when you can't think of anything to do! Here is a page of one of my own journals:

You are absolutely right. And often I'll go back to an old journal just to visit previous ideas I couldn't work out to find I now know what I need to do. It's a bit like a treasure hunt at times, really. :)
